Herschelle Benjamin

Herschelle Benjamin is dramaturg, kunsjoernalis, rubriekskrywer, akteur, regisseur, digter en bemarker. In 2018 is hy deel van die Kunstekaap se Nuwe Stemme-program, wen die Elizabeth MacLennan Internasionale beurs vir Teater van die Universiteit van Edinburg asook ’n Teksmark Skrywersbeurs en voltooi ‘n kunsjoernalistiek internskap by Die Burger. In 2019 debutteer hy met sy teks In Slavenhuis 39 by die Woordfees, waarvoor dit met die Beste Opkomende Kunstenaar(s)-prys bekroon is en ’n kykNET Fiësta-nominasie vir Beste Nuutgeskepte Afrikaanse Teks inpalm. Sy eerste opdrag-radiodrama vir die ATKV en Tienertoneel, Drosters, speel ook in 2019 op RSG. Hy was ook gekies vir die Jakes Gerwel Skrywersresidensie vir Jong Dramaturge te Somerset-Oos onder mentorskap van Amy Jeptha. Sy ander dramatekste tot dusver sluit in Dooie Drome, Aas Poetica, Korreltjie Kop Klong is my Dood en Agulhasvlakte. As digter word hy gereeld gepubliseer in Universiteit Stellenbosch se jaarlikse digbundel, Penseel, tydens sy studentjare.

Herschelle Benjamin is a dramatist, arts journalist, columnist, actor, director, poet and marketer. In 2018 he participated in Artscape’s Nuwe Stemme programme, won the Elizabeth MacLennan international stipend for Theatre of the University of Edinburg as well as a Teksmark writer’s stipend, and completes an internship as arts journalist at Die Burger. In 2019 he debuts at the Woordfees with his text In Slavenhuis 39, which won him the festival’s prize for best upcoming artist, as well as a kykNET Fiësta nomination for best new Afrikaans text. His first radio drama under the patronage of the ATKV and Tienertoneel, Drosters, airs on RSG in 2019 as well. Additionally, he was chosen for the Jakes Gerwel Writer’s Residence for Young Dramatists at Somerset East, under the mentorship of Amy Jeptha. His other drama texts include Dooie DromeAas PoeticaKorreltjie Kop Klong is my Dood, and Agulhasvlakte. As poet he was published regularly in Stellenbosch University’s yearly Penseel as student.
